David Secrest

I have grown to understand my work as a path that has led from intrigue to a maturing intimacy with the material and tools that I use. I have developed an understanding of how form relates to structure, and how texture influences the perception of form. My deepening mastery of metalworking has built a foundation from which I have been able to develop and explore new techniques and processes, and to integrate them into the field of creative arts.

The richness of my relationship toward any work of art has as much to do with the maker and the making as it does with the physical aesthetic or functional concern. The value I derive from a finished piece is found in the variety and intensity of feelings experienced during its creation, as well as from the alien reference it may solicit.

Natural objects do provide the basis for my sense of design; however, it is the conceptualization of structure and intentional manipulation of materials that holds my interest. If I were to name a mentor, it would be the material itself: its history, its structure, and its many working characteristics.

My intent is to keep questions open.
